The Audi Q5 belongs to the middle class SUV. But what about a used car? Can you easily buy them?

One can. The first generation Audi Q5 is also reliable as a used vehicle. It was built in Ingolstadt between 2008 and 2016. In the Audi SUV range, it occupies the middle position between Q3 and Q7. So it was a good compromise between the compact and luxury class, offered more space than the Q3, but required significantly less space than the Q7, which was over 5 meters long.

With a length of 4.60 meters, the Q5 remains clear in city traffic and when looking for a parking space, but still offers plenty of space for passengers and luggage and is therefore suitable as a family vehicle. The interior is beyond any doubt in terms of choice of materials and workmanship; and the seats, controls and air conditioning are also very good. Together with the agile but harmonious chassis, you can also spend long journeys comfortably and relaxed.

Technically related to A4

Technically closely related to the mid-range A4 model, the Q5 also uses the sedan's range of engines. The performance spectrum includes diesel and gasoline engines from 143 hp to 354 hp (SQ5). With the exception of the two-liter basic self-ignition with 143 hp, which was delivered with front-wheel drive as standard, all engines are combined with all-wheel drive.

The two-liter diesel was offered in various stages of development up to 190 hp. The entry-level variant - with 150 PS since the facelift in 2012 and with 163 PS since 2014 - is a good choice for sensible buyers, combining decent driving performance, comparatively low acquisition costs and low consumption. The top diesel is the three-liter V6 with up to 258 hp (since 2013). Its expansion stages as SQ go up to 340 hp. Illegal shut-off devices were used in the 3.0-liter as well as the two-liter diesel (2008 to 2015). Buyers of a used Q5 with one of these engines should ensure that appropriate recalls have been made.

The petrol engines are rarely found on the German used car market. A total of three 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbos with 180 PS, 211 PS and 169 kW / 230 PS were available over the previous production period. Then there is the very thirsty 3.2-liter V6 with 270 hp, which was replaced in 2012 by a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 with 272 hp. In the S version it has 354 hp. The hybrid with 180 kW / 245 PS and a standard consumption of 6.9 liters, available from mid-2011 to mid-2015, is completely exotic. Depending on the engine, a manual six-speed gearbox, eight-speed automatic transmission (tiptronic) or a seven-speed DSG (S tronic) are used.

Good equipment

After all, the basic models come with CD radio, automatic air conditioning and 18-inch rims. As is typical of Audi, however, the Q5 also offers many options beyond the standard equipment to invest money in comfort and safety, such as in bi-xenon cornering lights, parking sensors and an electric tailgate. The range also included an off-road optics package with underride protection and an S-Line sports package with partial leather sports seats. Six airbags and the anti-skid ESP ensure safety ex works. Lane keeping and blind spot assistants are available for an extra charge. The 2009 EuroNCAP crash test achieved the maximum rating of five stars.

During the TÜV general inspection (HU), the Q5 usually behaves in an exemplary manner. The older models also master the general inspection without any problems. In the TÜV list of defects for 8- and 9-year-old vehicles, the Ingolstadt dwarf takes fourth place as a deficiency dwarf. Occasionally brake hoses and drive shafts cause problems.

The Audi Q5 is a reliable vehicle. The first-time buyers are usually not satisfied with the basic equipment, so that the used ones often have a lot of comfort extras. The prices on the used car online exchanges are high despite the high mileage. The offers for models from 2009 start at around 13,000 euros; 30,000 euros and more are often called for younger models from 2016. (SP-X)
