The Ford EcoSport was denied great success in Germany. But the small SUV doesn't leave a bad impression - not even as a used car.

The Ford EcoSport took a long time to celebrate its rendezvous on the European market. The first edition was built in Brazil between 2003 and 2012 and enjoyed great popularity in South and Central America. But only the second generation (since 2012), who use the seventh generation Fiesta as a technology donor, made the leap into the big wide world and Europe.

It made its debut on the German market in 2014 and has since competed against Renault Captur and Opel Mokka. The start was a bit bumpy, the chassis set-up and the appearance of the material did not quite meet the expectations of local customers. No problem for Ford, the company simply gave the mini-SUV several facelifts and prettied the little one.

EcoSport with a cute design

The design of the EcoSport fulfills all requirements for a cuddly and robust appearance. The competition is more soft-washed, the Fiesta offshoot makes a big deal. The spare wheel attached to the rear door of the first models also contributes to this, reminiscent of real off-roaders. Without the wheel, the small SUV stretches to a length of 4.01 meters. The space is okay.

The trunk volume varies between 333 and 1,238 liters. The processing was only partially appreciated, so that a first facelift took place just over a year and a half after the market launch. The distinctive spare wheel has not been part of the standard equipment since then, and chrome trim and dimmable lighting are now upgrading the somewhat sparse interior. What remains is the jagged dashboard and many control buttons. Because it worked so well with the refresh, Ford donated the next facelift in 2017. This time the bigger SUV brother Kuga is the inspiration for design issues. A large touchscreen and finer materials move inside.

Three engines at the start

At the market launch there was a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with 112 hp, the 1.0-three-cylinder with 125 hp and the 1.5-liter diesel with 90 hp. The three engines are each coupled to a five-speed gearbox as standard, and a six-speed automatic is available for the little Otto. With the first facelift, the diesel got a little more power and now has 95 hp. As usual, the motors only drive the front wheels. Only in 2017 does Ford offer all-wheel drive for ecosport. This comes in combination with a 1.5-liter diesel with 125 hp. The petrol portfolio is updated and includes the well-known turbo three-cylinder with 125 PS and 140 PS. The previous entry-level four-cylinder with 112 hp will be withdrawn from the program and will be inherited by a 100-hp three-cylinder in mid-2018. Allrad has recently been removed from the offer.

The five-door with front-wheel drive initially relied on just one equipment line, which included 16-inch light-alloy wheels, air conditioning and CD radio. The option list is short and includes cruise control, the smartphone integration App Link and metallic paint. The EcoSport is now offered in four equipment lines; Those who value a sporty appearance will find what they are looking for with the “ST Line” equipment variant. Two-tone paintwork, xenon light and partial leather seats are available as extras. Driver assistants are offered at least at an additional cost.

Few known problems

So far, the TÜV only has evaluations of vehicles up to three years old. Problems are caused by the lighting system, brakes and frequent oil loss. Otherwise, the little Ford is on par with other vehicles of its kind. Used vehicles from 2014 start at around 8,500 euros, while the used car online portals offer models with a mileage of around 80,000 kilometers for this price.

If you are looking for a mini SUV with a rustic look and don't shy away from a somewhat rough tuned chassis, the Ford EcoSport is in good hands. Anyone looking for a four-wheel drive vehicle, however, has to search. Meanwhile, however, he is threatened with competition in his own house; the new Ford Puma, which is based on the current Fiesta (8th generation), is in the starting blocks and looks good even without a facelift.
