Incidentally, this does not only apply to Atlanta or Oklahoma, thanks to the noticeably smaller format it would also work in Augsburg or Offenbach. Except that it won't come to that. Because what is the best argument in the USA, in addition to the still large amount of space, slows down the giant and completely: the price. At 31,565 dollars, another 1,000 dollars cheaper than the normal Atlas and the equivalent of less than 30,000 euros, importing it would be the end of the Touareg, and even the Tiguan could stumble.

This is how the Chinese get it, where it is sold with significantly more tinsel than Teramont X. But in Europe, out of consideration for its secret flagship and the unbroken premium fantasies, VW is giving away the chance to once again offer a large car at a low price and thus a real Volkswagen.

The CrossSport looks much sleeker than the normal Atlas, because the rear fenders are flared and the otherwise steep and boxy rear is now nicely flat without the space in the second row suffering even a little and in the trunk would. And because the front row has updated infotainment and digital instruments as well as new seats with more lateral support, the CrossSport also feels a bit sportier for the driver. But on the highways and byways along the wintry west coast of Canada, CrossSport is more of a cruiser than an athlete - no wonder, with a length of almost five meters and a weight of two tons. More glider than fighter, he prefers to give the fat buddy for the relaxed ride,who doesn't let anyone or anything disturb him.

Not even through the inclines up to Whistler, where the Sea-to-Sky-Highway winds through the coastal mountains behind Vancouver. As relaxed as the CrossSport is tuned, so should the driver. Because it is better not to be in a hurry with the big VW: The 280 PS and 360 Nm of the 3.6 liter V6 engine in conjunction with the traditional automatic converter are not designed for fast sprints, but for a low resting heart rate. With the two-liter four-cylinder with 238 hp and 350 Nm, which, like the V6, is now also available with all-wheel drive, it should hardly be any different. And the coordination of the chassis and steering is more pleasing to the stomachs of family members than to the driver's pleasure center.

The Europeans have to do without the big thing with the chic rear end. But they have taken courage in Wolfsburg and will therefore soon literally bring a breath of fresh air to their SUV range - and it doesn't blow from behind, but directly from the front. Because while the first SUV coupe from VW for Europe is still a long time coming, the T-Roc will soon be available as a convertible. (SP-X)
