It is true that one still prefers to lead the thick ship through sweeping curves than through narrow serpentines. But even in the city you somehow feel more confident when you only need the little toe on your right foot to tear down the limits of physics. Because with so much power, the inertia of the mass is not far away. Therefore, all the Mustangs or M3s that have run shouldn't dare to provoke the GLS at the traffic light sprint. A kickdown catapults the colossus to 100 km / h in 4.0 seconds and throws supposedly sportier cars back into the dust, which is thrown up by the wide rollers on the 21-inch wheels.

And if you get lost on a winding country road or even in a canyon, you will be amazed at how agile the giant is, so light and easy to use, the limited-slip differential and active roll compensation make it appear. Of course, electronics can only stretch the limits of physics and not completely undo them. But where all the big ships from Detroit would have long been smeared off the road with whimpering tires, the GLS storms out the mountain like an angry rhinoceros in pinstripes - and the hissing and roaring of the eight-cylinder sounds almost as scary.

The AMG trim of the GLS can be driven very relaxed despite all the ambitions and so the pulse never gets out of hand on the first test tour even in the narrow canyons in the Hollywood hinterland. But the GLS still makes its owner sweat, not only at the gas station, where the standard value of 11.9 liters is a distant fable, but even before the first meter - at the dealer. But that's okay. Because at a price that will start at just under 150,000 euros, you can get hot.
