In times of the corona crisis, the bike is an alternative to public transport. But many cyclists do not wear a helmet - a mistake.

Because not wearing a helmet can lead to severe head injuries in accidents. This is pointed out by the CNS - Hannelore Kohl Foundation, which takes care of the concerns of people with traumatic brain injuries.

Every year tens of thousands of cyclists have an accident in German road traffic. Only about a fifth of them wear a helmet. That runs through all age groups. Seniors are also helpless, although they are particularly at risk if they fall.

Deceptive feeling

Unfortunately, the individual feeling of security is always deceptive. There are many situations in which a dangerous crash cannot be prevented. A classic are garage exits that cross bike paths. Anyone traveling at 20 km / h on one of these will inevitably crash into a car that unpredictably drives out of the garage.

Without a helmet you have almost no chance of surviving the situation unscathed. But not only other road users are a danger, sometimes a pothole can be enough. According to Siegfried Brockmann, Head of Accident Research at Insurers (UDV), 25 percent of the cyclists killed die in single accidents. In most fatal injuries, the head injury was also the decisive one.

Helmets save lives

That is why the conclusion must be clear: bicycle helmets can save lives. If it is adjusted correctly, it can be worn comfortably. It shouldn't wobble and it should also leave its ears free. In addition, one to a maximum of two fingers should fit between the strap fastener and the chin. It is essential to ensure that the helmet is not more than five years old, otherwise the material can become brittle.

Unfortunately, the federal government cannot make helmets compulsory for cyclists. The cycling clubs also speak out against it. The argument: The number of cyclists would decrease noticeably if helmets were compulsory. An argument that is difficult to understand against the background of the advantages that a helmet offers cyclists in terms of safety. (SP-X)
